We are humbly proud of our church’s as well as our town’s heritage. We are thrice blessed to be Christians, Texans and Roughnecks.
In 1928, the town of Sundown began as part of the C.C. Slaughter Ranch. Hence, our football field’s name: Slaughter Field.
Some say our town is named after a movie while others say the name came about because the settlers’ discussion ended at sundown. Either way, it is an iconic, memorable town name and the name of our church :
Sundown Church
Sundown Church began in 1938 as First Baptist Church. The photo above is of our church and its members taken in 1946. The photo was mailed to then Pastor Glen Smith. (The center white line is where it was creased to fit in the envelope)
Below is a photo of Sundown Church today.
Many Hockley County pastors in the early 1900s were instrumental in establishing churches in Hockley county communities including Sundown.
“The building of churches whereby the people could worship was an important part of the development of each community in Hockley County. Worship services were held first in the schools. Then as each church was organized, church buildings were erected and expanded as the congregation grew.” (Hockley County - The First 50 Years: Lillian Brasher)
Our congregation is excited to celebrate our church’s 100th Anniversary coming up in a few years! We hope you can come visit and worship with us soon. We would love to celebrate with you at Sundown Church’s centennial anniversary.
Sundown Church serves the Lord and the community as a non-denominational, foundational, Bible-based church with solid, core Christian values.
Sundown Church truly is
Built by Our Families. Blessed By God. Filled with His Presence.
